Save equals Spend

The other night my husband and I were talking about saving money. Here is where the conversation got heated. He said "look if we buy this one we will save money". I replied "what is the definition of SAVE to you". He said "to put it somewhere safe" and my reply was do you think the work SAVE is being miss used in our everyday language?
Save from the dictionary has several meanings
1. To rescue from danger
2. To preserve or safeguard
3. To set aside for future use,store
4. To prevent waste
5. To avoid fatigue, wear
6. To deliver from sin
7. With the exception of

When you clip coupons and use them at a grocery store and your register receipt states that you have just saved $2.15 doesn't it really mean you received a discount of $2.15 off your purchases? Could this be the reason that the SAVINGS of people is at a all time low? We are attaching the wrong word to the definition?
To me SAVING money means putting it in the bank relates to descriptions 2,3,4
